“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
“Have this mind among yourselves”: Christ is our model, our example, for humility and service. If the Son of God can be so humble as to become a servant, how humble should we become in response?
“did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped“: Christ’s equality with God was something He chose not to hold on to in a selfish, self-serving way. He was willing to lay even so great an attribute to serve and save mankind.
“emptied himself”: although Jesus is God, He didn’t go about throwing that in people’s faces. He was respectful and obedient to his earthly parents, and to the temple authorities, although none were actually worthy of the honor of washing His feet.
“taking the form of a servant”: in contrast to the earlier description “form of God”, Jesus was truly “God with us”, as His name Immanual proclaims.
